About the Ping ChipR Chipper
The Ping ChipR is a purpose-built chipper designed to take the wrist action and technique complexity out of greenside shots inside 40 yards. It sits at putter length (35 inches) with a 70-degree lie angle, encouraging golfers to stand closer to the ball and use a putting stroke rather than a traditional chipping motion. The 38.5-degree loft is equivalent to a 9-iron, producing a low, running chip that lands and rolls out predictably. At 330 grams of head weight — heavier than a wedge but lighter than a putter — the ChipR is built to swing with a pendulum motion.
The head is investment-cast from 431 stainless steel with perimeter weighting for stability on off-center contact. Tungsten in the toe and shaft tip adds MOI without increasing overall weight. The face uses Ping's MicroMax groove pattern, the same tighter-spaced groove design found on their i59 and i525 players irons, precision-milled for consistent spin on the short shots where the ChipR lives. A Hydropearl Chrome finish on the head repels moisture, and the cambered sole design prevents digging on tight lies and transitions smoothly through fringe and light rough.
Ping tested the ChipR against standard gap wedge chipping and found it reduced average proximity to the hole from 15 feet to 11 feet. That kind of improvement matters most for mid-to-high handicap golfers who lose strokes around the green with inconsistent wedge contact. It is not a replacement for a full short-game arsenal, but for the specific task of bump-and-run chipping, it simplifies things considerably.
